Day Trips from Baku: 7 Best Trips by Private Car

Baku is a great base: within one to four hours' drive you'll find ancient rock art, burning hills, mountain villages, wine country and ski resorts. Below are the day trips our drivers do most often — with honest travel times, so you can tell a relaxed day from a very long one.

All of them work best with a private car and driver: you leave when you want, stop where you like, and get dropped back at your hotel door. No group, no fixed bus schedule.

1. Gobustan and the mud volcanoes

About an hour south of Baku, Gobustan National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) has thousands of rock carvings, some over 10,000 years old, plus a good museum. Nearby are the famous mud volcanoes — small bubbling cones of cold grey mud on a bare hillside.

Tip: the last stretch to the mud volcanoes is a dirt track. After rain it can be too muddy for normal cars — your driver will tell you on the day. Combine with Yanar Dag on the way back for a full, easy day.

2. Absheron peninsula: Yanar Dag and Ateshgah

Two "fire" sights close to the city. Yanar Dag is a hillside where natural gas has been burning for decades — best just after sunset. Ateshgah is a fire temple once used by Zoroastrian and Hindu pilgrims. An easy half day, perfect after a long flight.

The old royal road west of Baku: the Diri Baba Mausoleum carved into a cliff, the ancient capital Shamakhi with its 8th-century Juma Mosque and hilltop Yeddi Gumbez tombs, an optional wine tasting at a local winery, and the mountain village of Lahij, famous for its cobbled lanes and coppersmiths.

  • 9–10 hours, hotel pickup in Baku
  • Fixed price per car: from $110 (sedan), $125 (SUV), $140 (minivan)
  • Driver waits at every stop; fuel, parking and water included

4. Candy Cane Mountains (Khizi)

Striped red, pink and white hills about 1.5 hours north of Baku — one of the most photographed landscapes in Azerbaijan. The colours are strongest in soft morning or late-afternoon light. Easy to combine with a stop at the Caspian coast on the way.

5. Quba and Khinalug

Quba is a green town known for its apple orchards and the Red Settlement (Qırmızı Qəsəbə) across the river. From there, a winding mountain road climbs to Khinalug — one of the highest and most remote inhabited villages in the Caucasus, with its own language.

Tip: it's a long day (around 3.5 hours each way to Khinalug). The mountain road is best from May to October; in winter it can close after snowfall. Many travellers prefer to stay a night in Quba or at Shahdag.

6. Gabala

Forests, lakes and the Tufandag cable cars, about 3 hours away. Visit Nohur Lake and the Yeddi Gozel waterfall, ride up the mountain, and stop at Diri Baba and Shamakhi on the way.

A one-way transfer to Gabala starts at $110 per car. As a day trip it's a long day — staying one night makes it much more relaxed. Read our full guide: Baku to Gabala: Every Way to Get There.

7. Shahdag

Azerbaijan's main ski resort, about 3 hours north. In winter (roughly December–March) it's skiing and snowboarding; in summer, cable cars, hiking and cool mountain air.

A one-way transfer to Shahdag starts at $120 per car. Shahdag transfers

Too far for one day?

Sheki (about 4.5 hours away), with its Khan's Palace and old caravanserai, is too far for a comfortable day trip. Make it a 2–3 day trip: Shamakhi → Gabala → Sheki with the same car and driver. Your driver's accommodation and meals are included in the price — no hidden extras.
