The 300 km drive west takes around four hours: fast highway across the Shirvan plain to Shamakhi, then a green, winding road through the Caucasus foothills past Ismayilli toward the old silk-road town of Shaki.

Shaki earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list for the Khan Palace — an 18th-century summer residence whose shebeke stained-glass windows are assembled from thousands of pieces of wood and colored glass without a single nail or drop of glue. Down the cobbled street, the caravanserai that once hosted silk-road merchants now serves tea in its courtyard, and no visit ends without a box of Sheki halva, the town's famous saffron-and-nut pastry.
Five kilometers away in Kish village stands one of the oldest churches in the Caucasus. Most visitors stay one or two nights; many combine Shaki with Gabala on the return leg — ask us for a two-stop quote, and your driver will plan the route.

There is an overnight train, but it's slow and stops at Sheki station — 17 km outside the town, so you still need a taxi with your luggage. A private transfer from Baku to Sheki (also spelled Shaki) is about 4 hours door to door, leaving whenever suits you.
