Door to door from Baku city or the airport — fixed price per car, day or night.
Gobustan lies about 65 km southwest of Baku, an easy one-hour drive along the Caspian coast on the Salyan highway. The road is flat and fully paved the whole way, passing the oil fields and the Sangachal terminal before turning inland toward the reserve.
Most trips start at the modern interactive museum at the foot of the mountain, then continue a few minutes up to the open-air petroglyph trails. The famous mud volcanoes are a separate 10–15 minute ride from the main road on a rough unpaved track — an SUV handles it comfortably, and local 4x4 drivers also shuttle visitors from the turn-off.
From Heydar Aliyev Airport the drive takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, skirting the city on the airport highway. As a half-day trip, Gobustan combines well with an afternoon Baku city tour.
Gobustan National Park is Azerbaijan's most important ancient site and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Its rocky hillsides hold more than 6,000 petroglyphs — carvings of hunters, dancers, boats and animals made over roughly 40,000 years of human presence. The interactive museum at the entrance is one of the best in the country and worth an hour before walking the trails.
Two curiosities make the visit memorable: the Gaval Dash, a natural "tambourine stone" that rings musically when struck, and a 1st-century inscription left by Rome's Legio XII — the easternmost Roman inscription ever found.
Nearby, the badlands hide dozens of miniature mud volcanoes that gurgle and spit cool grey mud — Azerbaijan has more of them than anywhere else on Earth. Together, the carvings, museum and volcanoes make a comfortable half-day trip from Baku, with no walking beyond easy trails.
