Shamakhi was the capital of the Shirvan state for centuries and is one of the oldest towns in Azerbaijan. Its Juma Mosque, founded in the 8th century, is among the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, and the Yeddi Gumbez ("Seven Domes") mausoleum complex on the hillside holds the tombs of the Shirvan khans. The surrounding valleys are Azerbaijan's main wine region, with several wineries open for tastings, and the Pirgulu highlands above the town host the national astrophysical observatory.
